"I have felt love because I have felt hate. I question love's fluctuation and degree like the weather. It can warm or chill me. With her it is always everything and it can only be such a way. When she is unpleasant and distressed looking in the morning I'll tell her she's beautiful, but she will reject my complement. When she cries I give her false hope of 'it will be ok' to which she hugs me with appreciation. When our kids are questionable and she questions her role I tell her that's what they get from me. When we are old none of this will matter. Yet, somehow, now, we place so much weight in things that carry nothing in the end. If she ever asked if I loved her I would say, 'no.' For what I feel for her is beyond love and unfortunately there is neither a word in German or English to implicate a more intimate engagement above love." -E.B.
