When a poet dies there is no thought that one can step into his or her place. In the workplace when a person dies a job opens. I have friends at universities who are benevolent vultures in disguise. When they hear that a colleague has passed away they lament, but then, after a few days, they begin to ask if there will be a position open. This is the desperation of our times. They are not bad people. Everyone is looking to survive and move up in life. At the end of the day I'm very content in knowing that when I die there is no vacancy to be filled.
